In addition to warmer weather and the first buds of spring, early March brings an important checkpoint for the calendar year: the start of Daylight Saving Time (DST).

On Sunday, March 14, 2021 at 2 a.m. local time, clocks will skip ahead one hour (to 3 a.m.) to begin Daylight Saving Time. This change will remain in effect until Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 7, 2021.

Keep these tips in mind to ensure a successful ‘Spring Forward.’

Where Does Daylight Saving Time Apply?

In nearly every state in the U.S. and Canada, Daylight Saving Time is observed from the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November. Hawaii and certain parts of Arizona are excluded.

Several other countries, including much of Europe and the United Kingdom, follow similar schedules with slight variances based on locale. Likewise, Mexico adopted Horario de verano (which mirrors Daylight Saving Time) in 1996 because of its increasing ties to the United States.

Though Daylight Saving Time sets the standard for business and government, it's not to be confused with astronomic timing. Unlike Daylight Saving Time, which is adjusted twice a year, astronomic timing continuously adjusts ON/OFF times based on approximate latitude and date to align with sunset and sunrise times. The two schedule formats are usually suited for different applications but can also be used concurrently.

What Systems Do I Need to Update?

In addition to updating the wall clocks and displays throughout your office, school, facility or home, be sure to update controls and systems that are tuned to a time-based reference point.

Many popular Intermatic controls, including the Ascend® Smart In-Wall Timer, ST01 and EJ600, will adjust automatically to the time change. However, mechanical timer controls and select electronic controls may need to be adjusted manually.

Use the start of Daylight Saving Time is to confirm the time on devices, verify time schedules and change batteries (if needed). This will ensure lights and appliances stay on when they need to be and keep you on schedule heading into spring.
